Steps to register for USTA in NorCal

Many tennis-playing newcomers to Reno and Northern California don’t realize that NorCal is the only section in the United States that uses its own proprietary web system. The rest of the United States uses USTA’s own TennisLink system to track adult league matches.

Because users’ logins and passwords in the two system are separate, but the two accounts must still be linked, the signup process for NorCal is unfortunately a lot more complicated than for other sections. Let’s hope that NorCal eventually integrates into the TennisLink system.

Until then, below is the signup process for NorCal.

  • Sign up for USTA
    • If you don’t already have a USTA membership, go to TennisLink and create one. Please note that merely creating an account is not enough. You must have an actual paid annual membership for all of the steps below to work.
  • Self rate
    • You may have already self-rated as part of the USTA signup process above (or if you have already played in USTA leagues outside of NorCal), and in that case you can skip this step.
    • Go to TennisLink and select LOGIN. Once logged in, just to the right of it saying WELCOME [YOUR NAME], there should be a blue hyperlink that says self rate, or near the PENN logo there should be a blue button that says self rate.
    • After you answer the questionnaire, it should give you a rating. If it does not give you the rating you want, you can appeal your rating. However, this will take a minimum of a couple of days, and the appeal process cannot be expedited.
  • Create a NorCal profile (If you have any trouble with these next two steps, NorCal’s phone number is 510-748-7373)
    • Go to the NorCal website. In the bottom-right area, follow a link that says NEW TO NORCAL LEAGUES? REGISTER YOUR NORCAL PROFILE NOW!
    • Fill out the information. It will send a confirmation link to the email you specify to complete the profile. If it does not send an email the first time, retry and it should work. (Also check your spam/junk folder.)
    • Once complete, you should be able to go back to the login page and use the credentials you created to log in.
  • Join a team by following the steps in this PDF.
