Our History
Washoe Tennis Club (originally the Reno Tennis Club) was founded with a simple yet enduring mission: to promote and grow the sport of tennis on public courts in the Reno area. Our mission aligns directly with that of the USTA — “to promote and develop the growth of tennis.”
Formally organized in 1928 (with roots dating back to circa 1923), the club first made its home at the Wingfield Park public courts in downtown Reno. Today, our home is the Washoe County Tennis Center at 2335 West Moana Lane.
Under a long-standing Memorandum of Agreement with Washoe County Parks & Recreation, the Washoe Tennis Club serves as a proud partner in maintaining and improving the six tennis courts. In exchange, we gain the ability to schedule and host club events and activities. This mutually beneficial partnership has delivered well-maintained courts and vibrant tennis programming for the entire community.
The club has historically organized fun tournaments, social mixers, and other events throughout the year. Today, the club hosts the biggest singles ladder in Reno (3 seasons per year), bump doubles (3 seasons per year), and the hugely popular Washoe Slam USTA tournament. We are the primary home for numerous USTA leagues, including adult, mixed doubles, 50+ mixed doubles, senior, and combo divisions. Our teams have achieved notable success, with two 4.0 Adult Women’s teams qualifying for Nationals — one winning the 2003 USTA 4.0 Women’s National Championship — and the 2005 6.5 Women’s Combo team capturing the State Cup Challenger. The club was also honored as the USTA NorCal Organization of the Year in both 2004 and 2006.
Today, Washoe Tennis Club is one of the largest and most active public tennis clubs in the Reno/Tahoe area. Our members come from Reno/Sparks as well as Lake Tahoe (both California and Nevada sides), Carson City, Minden, and Gardnerville.
The Board of Directors consists entirely of volunteers who generously donate their time to organize events, address member needs, and collaborate regularly with Washoe County Parks & Recreation on court maintenance and facility improvements.
Our name
In 2022, after nearly a century as the Reno Tennis Club (RTC), the board voted to change the club’s name to Washoe Tennis Club.
The decision was driven by two main factors: the Plumas Tennis Center had recently been renamed Reno Tennis Center (also RTC), creating name and acronym confusion between the two separate organizations. Additionally, many players and locals already referred to our facility as the “Washoe” courts or Washoe Tennis Center.
