Who We Are

The Washoe tennis courts are located off Moana Lane in “old southwest” Reno. There are six well-maintained public courts, including restroom facilities nestled behind the Washoe Public golf course. Washoe Tennis Club, originally founded as Reno Tennis Club in 1923 in partnership with Washoe County, holds events and activities out of the Washoe courts.

The WTC is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the Washoe Tennis Center courts. The WTC and Washoe County have a contract that gives the WTC control over the courts in exchange for the obligation of maintaining the courts (click here to see the approved 2022 proposal). The bare minimum obligation is to resurface two courts per year, but WTC has proudly exceeded this contractual obligation by at least 5 times every year. This partnership has been a great benefit to both Washoe County and to the community, as it saves the county money from having to maintain the courts, the courts are exceptionally well-maintained (every court gets resurfaced every 3 years, producing the best courts in town), and the WTC is able to provide the tennis community with USTA and in-house organized events for a miniscule fraction of the membership fee people pay at for-profit clubs. WTC board members are not paid, and they do not get any perks, gifts, or other benefits of any kind. Unlike for-profit clubs, literally 100% of WTC membership fees go directly into (and only into) paying for court maintenance and improvements.

WTC pays for a large majority of costs associated with direct upkeep of the courts. The county also gives assistance, primarily helping with the paving of the parking lot, painting lines in the parking lot, resurfacing the walkways around the courts, and trash removal.

Our typical annual expenses include court resurfacing, nets, windscreens, rollers/squeegees, gas/upkeep of a giant blower to clean courts daily or as needed, and especially large-scale projects such as putting in the best hitting wall in town (actual tennis court surface with fence behind the player), replacing a wooden deck with a layered concrete deck with a pergola over the top, installing cameras so players can see live court conditions on the website, or planting 44 arborvitaes on the west side of one of the courts for wind protection. We put every dime of membership money to good use; all of the expenses are ultimately in direct service to our paying members.

Tennis games are easily “picked up” by players just by showing up and getting a game with others who “hang out” at the courts. This is the only place in Reno that you can just go and get a game without knowing anyone! Washoe can boast of friendly people, super tennis and six awesome tennis courts.
