It’s a familiar refrain in our local tennis circles: “If only Reno had more ATP or WTA events to watch.” Sure, we got a thrill a few years back when the Davis Cup brought the USA-Colombia showdown to town, but those high-profile visits are few and far between.

Here’s the good news many overlook: We do have elite, international-caliber tennis happening annually in our own backyard. The UNR men’s and women’s teams draw top recruits from across the globe—players so skilled that their self-rated NTRP levels would easily hit 5.5 or even 6.0+ on the USTA’s adult recreational scale. These aren’t just college athletes; they’re future pros honing their craft right here.

Watching them in action isn’t just entertaining—it’s inspiring. It sharpens our own game, fuels players’ drive, and builds community spirit. So why not make it a win-win? Grab a seat, bring your cheers, and support the Pack—it’s the perfect way to enjoy watching world-class play without leaving town.

While most of their road trips take them to spots like Tulsa or San Diego, this September 19-21 tournament keeps the action local, pitting Nevada against powerhouses UC Davis and Air Force. All three squads are expected to crack the national top 75 rankings, promising fierce competition.

Expect a packed slate of matches in round-robin format: singles and doubles flights for positions 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, and 7&8. The tournament will begin on Friday at 10am and end on Sunday around 1:00.

Saturday stands out as prime viewing time, with courts buzzing from 9 a.m. until around 4 p.m. Saturday at around 11:00am will be of special interest, as most #1 and #2 players will be playing singles, with snacks provided by SJTA.

The women’s team will have their first home match in the spring, so be sure to watch their calendar for that.
