Meet the Member: Nirmal Govind
Where are you from and what brought you to the Reno/Tahoe area?
I’m originally from India but grew up in the Middle East (Kuwait), India, and then moved to the US for grad school. We were in the bay area for a long time and moved to Reno last year as our older son wanted to attend the Davidson Academy.
What’s your tennis story? How did you get started and what keeps you going?
Started taking lessons and playing at the local club when I was a kid and loved the sport so kept going! It’s such a great way to stay fit, especially as you get older, and it’s something you can constantly get better at! Been a member at WTC since last August and have been playing bump doubles, singles ladder, and more recently USTA.
What is another favorite hobby other than tennis?
Tough one since kids and work keep me quite occupied, but I’d say travel. We recently visited Yellowknife, Canada and saw the northern lights. Highly recommend!
Who is your favorite professional tennis player? Why?
Roger! His seemingly effortless style was so much fun to watch. Pete Sampras would be a close second, loved his super-accurate serve!
Any fun plans for the upcoming summer?
We’ll be in Europe and India visiting family and doing a Norwegian fjords cruise.
Can you tell us about your family, occupation, pets, etc.?
My wife and I have two young boys who keep us super busy! We all play tennis and other racket sports like badminton, ping-pong, and squash. I work in tech and have led data/AI/engineering teams at startups and bigger companies in a few different industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and media/entertainment. It’s been fun getting to see many different sectors and how they operate!
