Meet the Member: Tren Nolan
Where are you from and what brought you to Reno?
My family moved here when I was 5, so I’ve lived in Reno for 58 years. It’s my home.
How long have you been a member of WTC?
I started playing tennis again in 1995 after a 20+ year layoff. I joined WTC at that time.
What WTC or USTA activities do you participate in?
Back in the late 90’s I started playing the ladder tournament, the compass tournament, all events that WTC had, and have been playing for the 4.5/5.0 USTA WTC teams every year since 1995.
What is your tennis story? How did you get started and what keeps you going?
I started playing tennis when I was 12 and played through high school and had a short stint on the UNR tennis team (less than a year). I started up again in 1995 and have been playing 4+ days per week ever since.
I love tennis because it’s healthy and competitive. Most of my current friendships are my tennis people I’ve played with over the years so it’s a very big part of my life.
What is another favorite hobby other than tennis?
Besides tennis, I try to ski as much as possible and even coached the Wooster race team for 24 years. Like tennis, I love to ski to because it’s healthy and it’s an outdoor sport.
Who is your favorite professional tennis player? Why?
My favorite tennis player is Roger Federer. Classy, respectful, and incredibly graceful and talented. One of the top two tennis players of all time.
Any fun plans for the winter? How do you like to spend your time during the snowy months?
I love the winter. I will be doing some skiing and playing a lot of tennis in the cold weather. I also started playing a little pickleball at the convention center, so that’s something I’ll also be doing this winter.
Can you tell us a little about your family, occupation, pets, etc.?
I have 3 children. My daughter Alia is 29 and lives in Buffalo NY with her husband and daughter. She’s a coach at Buffalo State University. My son Trenner is 26 and he’s a data analyst in Colorado Springs. And my youngest is Kye (21 years old) and he’s a student at Nevada and he lives with his wife here in town.
I taught math at Wooster high for 30 years and am currently in my 11th year at Manogue H.S. I spend a lot of time with my family including my parents who are 86 and 84. As a family we get together one to two evenings per week. Big family guy.
Any other fun information you would like to share about yourself?
I enjoy working out and staying in shape. I’m a big reader and love spending any time with my family.
